Supporting Leaders and Teams to Identify Team Purpose
The Challenge
All teams need purpose. Teams without purpose meander. People within teams with no purpose go from task to task, ticking boxes, accounting for doing things, but ultimately don’t know where it is all heading.
Without purpose, keeping busy is the goal, not being found out is the success factor. It all undermines performance, achievement, development and creating value for customers and other stakeholders.
Identifying team purpose is rarely straightforward. A leader may define what they believe the team is there to achieve, but does the team truly understand and commit to that purpose? And does it reflect the value that customers and stakeholders actually need from the team? When expectations differ, aligning these perspectives becomes essential to creating a purpose everyone can stand behind.
Taking Action
A team’s purpose is defined through an iterative process. It may start with a leader’s draft purpose, but it needs to be checked with stakeholders and the team themselves. During this time it’s important to listen and understand different points of view and consider incorporating them into a new draft of the purpose.
Ideally, everyone agrees – but sometimes a leader may wish to shift the team in a new direction, perhaps to meet the expectations of new customers, rather than existing ones. The purpose may then need to be articulated clearly, convincingly and repeatedly so that the shift can take hold
Finally, a purpose is nothing if it remains on paper. True purpose in a team is held within – people care, and commit to their purpose. They are motivated because it’s the right thing to do, not because they get a bonus for compliance.
